The Osprey has a very unique background. Built in 1960 on Harkers Island N.C., considered by many to be the wooden boat capital of the East Coast. Made of solid white oak framing, Juniper decks and planked with pure Honduran mahogany. She was one of five sister ships built for a charter fishing company in Florida. Soon thereafter, returned to North Carolina where she was put into service as an offshore head boat (bottom fishing). She remained there until 1996 when updated Coast Guard regulations required the owner to make some costly changes. From there she was sold to another who converted her into a foredeck shrimping trawler. Due to issues with the way she handled while dragging nets, that venture was short lived. It was not until finally in late 2007 that the current owner Captain Lucas Smith implemented the necessary changes to bring her back to a 49 passenger USCG Certified Vessel. These changes are now complete after more than two years of TLC. She is a work of art and our pride and joy. We welcome the curious at heart to come aboard and see a piece of living history.
